I have a story to share, and I also need some advice on what I could do? Today I let out some of my game chickens, my dogs started barking and created a huge scenario so I quickly ran out the house to find my neighbors dog attacking one of my chickens with her brood, the rooster rushed over there before I could get there and probably saved her and the chicks life. Both hen and rooster were spurring the dog but both received a pretty rough beating, my hen has a limp wing and lots of feathers lost and my rooster has a limp wing also. I chased the dog out and told the owner what happened they said it wouldn't happen again and there dearly sorry I accepted there apology and went to treat the hen and the rooster there doing much better just a limp in there wing, nothing seems to be broken so I'm hoping for a quick recovery, anyways today I seen the dog digging again trying to get under the fence what can I do?

Tell the dog owners. You can get some fencing and line if around the fence attaching it to your original fence. and spread it out on the ground. They will just try to dig next to the fence that is standing up and get nowhere. But really your neighbors need to keep there dog under control, in my opinion. Or get a bigger dog that will scare their dog away jk! :)

At some feed stores they have a device that hooks up to your hose and it is motion activated and sprays a REALLY REALLY powerful jet of water, but if you go out there you will be sprayed (so you have to turn it off). Another is electric fencing. My friend kept the dog that was attacking her chickens and chicken trained it after she caught it. It was at her house for 5 days, and the neighbor didn't even notice!(He really didn't care about it and was fine with her training it.) Hope that helps!

Welcome to BYC!

Unfortunately most dogs will always see chickens as dinner and most dog owners don't care about your birds. You can try electric fencing, although I have never used it and don't know how well it works. You may have to consider keeping your birds in an enclosed run to protect them. I am sure the neighbors are not going to chain up their dog for your birds and sometimes it is just not worth letting them free range what with all the dangers out there.

I hope your birds are going to be ok and good luck with this issue.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might like to check out the Predator forum for ways of dealing with dogs www.backyardchickens.com/f/13/predators-and-pests X2, an electric fence around the perimeter is usually a very good way of deterring dogs if you can't fortify the amount of fence you would need too keep them out... and you don't want to do anything permanent to your neighbors dog if they won't control it.

Seems like your 'good' neighbor, is giving you a line. What you can do if possible, is get a hold of their dog and drop it off at the nearest animal shelter. If they ask if you've seen the dog - tell them not recently - if he's at the shelter you haven't seen him since. They may not even care. if they do, it will cost them to get him back.

Do you have a sheriff to report it too (next time document with photos) or animal control. In many areas attacking livestock permits you to shoot the dog.
