chicken math is like 4 + 4 = 24 chickens

basically you start off thinking you'll just get four...and before you know it you've been afflicted with a bad case of chicken math and it results in your having to build a bigger coop

That is SO truthful! haha! We started out wanting 8. 6 months ago. Now, we've doubled the coop, had up to 24 laying chickens (19 now) & even have 20 meat chicks! ANd we're talking about getting more. When you get a certain number of eggs, your excitement becomes selfish & you want more so you can either sell or give them away. (I sold my first 5 1/2 dozen today at $3 a dozen- yippee!). Good luck keeping less than 10!!

Four's a very good number! I had four, and it's good because even if they don't all get along, there's always someone who will "hang" with the one who is being left out of everything.

Not so much with three, the young ones are tight and the old one just has no friends.

Thanks for explaining what chicken math is, frosthazard! I had no idea, and was trying to figure out from the posts about it I've seen in various areas of the forum.
