Well good luck! Im sure you will have a good hatch. I have a brooder full of JJ's Butlers on a table in my living room now.

I am trying to see if they will calm down abit if they are exposed to folks constantly. Im sure they will never be coturnix calm, but hope for less panic!! So far they are still sure their life is in jeopardy if you touch the brooder. They dont seem to panic as you walk by like they did thou.

This is the main reason I will always have at least a few coturnix. They like to see you, and are friendly birds.

To summarize....

Bobwhites are spooky by nature. No matter how much you expose your self to them, they never seem to look forward to seeing you!!!

well the baby quail are in my "mudd room" the back room of my house by the back door until they are about 11 days old. In that time every day my 5 year old makes sure he spends plenty of time catching them and forcing his love upon them (Dont worry none of them has ever sustained death or injury from this). I really dont care about the friendlnest towards people aspect i'm more concerned about them trying to kill or eat or injure each other. I try to keep boxes of sand in my quail pens and put new sand in their periodically. This seems to keep them occupied to an extent and not so bored to where they start picking each other. Do bobs injoy the sandbox as much as contornix? Anything else they like particularly that I could amuse or apease them with to keep them calm.

Yes, they do DIG a dust box. When there small and feelin stress, they also love a real feather, feather duster. Just lean it up in the corner of your brooder and they will soon be snuggled up amongst the feathers. Its also great fun for your son to pick up the feather duster and watch the quail scatter... My grand kids love that part.

Noted Feather duster, got it... baby quail having heart attacks from being chased by a non living feather monster, check. Man my 5 yr old would have a feild day with that.

Commonly called Cortnix around here - makes me feel like I'm pronouncing it wrong when I say it correctly.
