questions about buying hatching eggs...

I ship extras because. I sell less then they lay. If i have 16 layers I sell a dozen eggs. If all 16 lay i included them but if they dont i still get the dozen ive promised. Ive shipped 20 or so orders and as far as i know every egg has gotten to its new place crack free. So for me I shipp extras because one I like getting extras and 2. the girls have layed more than expected.

I venture to say that you all miss the point. Why not offer the dozen+2 and if anything you get the dozen or close to it in the end. I see lots of folks do the ten+2 and be, all told, only in for the dozen.

Just saying.

BTW. super new here and dealing with four super flighty finicky Brown Leghorns and two beautiful Lavender Favorelles from Pete's stock.

I bought 6 + because I only wanted a couple of chicks. I can't get chicks of the quality I want for a price I can afford, with shipping and all, and the issue of wanting too few. However, I got 5 chicks (6 hatched, but one died) for $20. A much better price than 5 chicks from say My Pet Chicken (one of the few who willl ship really small quantities) AND much better quality chickens.

My seller threw in 2 extras. They didn't hatch, even though none were broken. I feel that the + is really a good will gesture. The 6 is the guaranteed. As stated earlier, maybe the way the hens are normally laying, only 6 could be guaranteed to lay in the very short time frame the seller has to collect and ship for an auction. But the hens made a special effort on that day. I know that some days, I only get 2 eggs, some days I get 4 (as I said, small number of chickens). Therefore, I could only guarantee 2, but potentially could send 4.

Maybe this is repetitive over what was said earlier.

With my quantity limitations, I have to pass on 12 egg auctions, so I'm really grateful some people are willing to bother with the hassle of packing eggs and sending them to someone like me who can only get a few. It's a lot of work to pack eggs and people don't always want to bother for the piddly $20.
