Questions about desiese

Also is MG the thing I have heard folks on here talking about that prompts a "closed flock" attitude?

Yes it is passed from the hen to the egg. Not a fun sickness. I've read that its carried by wild birds and if your flock free ranges they'll test positive for it because it is everywhere. They don't have to have symptoms to be carriers of MG.
Not sure if this is accurate information its just what I've read.

So if I understand you right since my birds free range I should not be adding any new birds? I think that would apply to any chicken owners if their birds are allowed outside. Hmmmm

That sounds like Marek's....it is a smell you will never forget!!!

Even if the pens were clean, the animals need better medical care. The Marek's hen needs to be euthanized. Rabbits are big carriers of Coccidia so that could be where the bloody poo is coming from.

Do what you feel is best, it is very hard to call in the humane society especially if you are unsure whether or not she is neglecting them. However, by all the illnesses that you saw, I would say she is in over her head and you would be doing her, and the sick animals, a favor.

Yes she is in over her head. She kept saying that too. I would call her a bird hoarder. Her whole garage was full of quail, doves, pigeons, and parrots.

As hard as it might be, do her and the animals a favor, make that call. I think you will sleep better knowing that you did the right thing for everyone/thing involved.

Its everyones own call... I've quit adding adult birds to my flock. Just chicks from hatcherys or from top breeders. I've also purchased hatching eggs over the internet. In my opinion its not a good idea to buy adult birds. But lots of people have and had great success.
ETA the only adult birds I've purchased where 8 week old pullets from Jean with pips and peeps. She has a very clean place and her birds where very healthy! It was over a year ago. They where healthy and laid beautiful blue eggs. I gave them to my sister for her EE project.
