We're pretty new at this and I've done some reading on the subject of double eggs but still have some questions. We have a RIR that lays double yolk eggs nearly every day. We call her Eggzilla. :D So, I read that they were hereditary but I thought it was still an occasional thing. Its it weird to get one daily? Also she's our first hen to turn broody and gets quite violent when I steal her monster eggs, we do have an EE roo and I'm just curious what the odds of her brooding one would be? Theoretically. We don't really plan on breeding her.

I have 3 RSL hens (no roo) and have had 2 giant eggs that were double yolkers! One day apart - no clue if one hen did both or two different ones did them...they looked like Duck eggs! LOL Boy sure were good tho! Hope we can get some more!

From what I read it is a rarity...but maybe some breeds are more prone...my are hybrids with RIR in them...so who knows! I just love the bounty and the fresh eggs we get! And...my hens are pets as well...I call and they run to me...they know who brings out the goodies! LOL Enjoy your doubles!

The odds of a double yolker hatching are very low, but not impossible. It is rare for both embryo to make it to full term, and they often cannot hatch without assistance. Brooding can be tough on a hen, so I would not suggest letting her brood these. Chances are heavy that she will not successfully hatch them and it would not benefit her.
