Questions About Duck Wax

Not from the poultry supply sellers. Order direct from the factory that makes it. I think the company I used was Blended Waxes.

I'll have to look back through my receipts.

If you butcher ducks while they are fully feathered (don't have any pin feathers), you won't need the wax.

If they are covered in pin feathers, you will go crazy picking them all out. The wax takes them all off slick as can be.

You can skin if there are a lot of pin feathers, but skin on ducks in on tight and skinning them is a lot of work, too.

The shipping on the wax is high because it is heavy. But it can be filtered and reused over and over. So it is worth it if you are going to be doing ducks or geese on an ongoing basis.

Thanks so much for the info -- Love the picture of your Pomeranian - we have a trio of Pomeranians. --- only 1 gosling this year, but now have an incubator so more next year hopefully.

Thanks Oregon Blues! I wasn't aware of this either. I thought all ducks had the pin feathers, no matter the age. I still will get the wax as a 'just in case'. You never know what or when you'll need something. Sorry for the delay in reply, not getting notified with emails.

I wonder if a trick my brothers use in skinning deer would work to make skinning ducks easier? Once the deer is hung up by its hind legs they cut a small slit in the skin and insert the end of the hose from a small air compressor. Turn on the air and then watch the deer blow up like a ballon, with the skin separating from the meat in the process. Then, continue with butchering as usual. The skin will just peel right off very quickly. They did use this trick on a squirrel once, and it worked fine.
