Questions about introducing/integrating 6-week old chicks with 9-week old chicks.

From what I'm hearing you say, 2 of the older 5 are being bullies, the other 3 older chicks are ok with the youngsters? My recommendation is to separate the 2 bullies from each other. When I had to integrate chicks, I started by putting an older chick into the pen with the smaller chicks, then adding the older ones one at a time until they were all in the new space... it seemed to work better to add the older chicks into the younger chicks space for integration, as the younger ones were already established in their own space, and the older ones were entering a new environment. I think the 2 bullies are feeding off each other. Just a suggestion, you might take one of the bullies away for a week, and put her with the 3 younger ones. Loneliness might make her bond with the newbies, then you could add these 4 back to the other group. Eventually, they will sort it out. I think as a chicken owner, it's harder for us to watch than it is for the youngsters to experience.

I think that is pretty good advice, and something that we hadn't considered. I totally agree also with you about it being tougher for us than it probably is for them.

I think we may've just had a new development here, though. My wife and I had just been talking about a good sign that we'd perhaps turned a corner on this whole process would be if the young'uns were to go into the coop on their own, instead of us having to put them in there each night, but seemed like we were probably pretty far from that still. However, I just was going out to check on them all, and actually witnessed the young'uns follow the older chicks into the coop for the night. This is a first, and I was so happy to get to see it happen. I monitored for a few minutes to make sure that they didn't come running out or get chased out, but they stayed in. Went back outside after about 10 more minutes, and they were still in the coop, so I shut the pop door.

So excited!
