I have a question a off subject...Do you let your ducks and chickens in the same pasture as your horse? I dont but I thought about it, and if it would be bad for my horses? do you know?

I really hope someone chimes in soon with some answers...Im on day 20 tomorrow...Lets hope my green eggs are duck and not chicken, otherwise they migth start hatching in another day...

Today 4:26 pmWell, while we are waiting.....
here is what i was going to do ....
my hen is in a pile of straw in the hallway of my barn between the horse stalls and the chicken pens.
i have put straw bales around her nest 2 high so she can still get in and out, probably tonite i will put food and water in that area just in case..
i should say i have 2 other hens and a drake that free range all day and they get in and out of the barn through the horses stalls.
My SIL has had ducklings hatch and not had very good luck with them living very long. She found a couple at the other end of the barn dead.
i think baby ducks run around and forget how to get back to momma JMO
i think it is best to enclose them for a couple weeks til they figure out who momma is and what is what.
after they all hatch i will probably put them in a chicken pen so i can go in and play with them and get them used to being handled.
sound good???

That will work just be sure coons, weasels, possums can't get to them.

If you can put a fence or some type of barrier around your hens nesting sight then you won't need to move mom & babies for the first few days after hatch. She will want to move them after that unless you can clean up her old nest sight... it gets pretty nasty w/all of them hatching out. My Scovy broodies will move their babies within 24hr after the last one they expect to hatch does so & is fluffy & dry.
Provide a secured area, (separate pen, shed, dog house,) for mom and babies if possible away fm drakes and non brooding ducks..... well and other broodies IF you have the room for 1-2wks. I don't have the room & if your hatches are close together you end up w/moms poking others ducklings or in my case w/Charlotte (head hen) she steals their babies. Sigh! It does work out well since Charlotte is such a terrific mom and as head hen her ducklings get top ranking in Scovy pecking order.
I provide my broodies w/food & water close by and will give them a treat, like peas, once a day within neck stretching distance.

They hiss at you .... then proceed to gobbble up their peas!

As far as socializing the ducklings, I like my broodies to raise their ducklings as much as possible. They do a huge part of the work of teaching them about danger, what to eat, & introducing them to the flock while protecting them fm harm. I think Silkie Sue had a good plan by putting them into a chicken pen so she could handle them every day. Just remember momma duck will not be happy w/you so you may have to separate her for a bit each day. She does need to be able to see her ducklings or at least not be away fm them for more than an hr or so or she may reject or break her brood early. I had one hen break her brood when her ducklings were only about 3wks old because a drake bred her once to many times. Some momma ducks are better at fending off unwanted attn. than others.

Needless to say, her ducklings were pretty much on their own then. I had another broody that allowed them to tag along w/her & her young'ns though she wasn't real happy about it.

Thanks for the help. I want my ducks to do most of the work. I would be upset if someone took my babies away after i did all that work to get them here. I want them to be friendly though, but i do spend alot of time in the run so hopefully the moms will let me get close the bigger the babies get. Most of my chickens and ducks are so friendly i have to kind of push them out of my way with my foot just to walk.

You're right..... the older the ducklings get the less "protective" the moms are and will let you get closer......LOL actually, the ducklings have a mind of their own as they get older & HEAD for the lady w/PEAS before mom says its safe.

TOO FUN!!!

i don't really have control over where the chickens and ducks go during the day and they don't really hang out in the pasture too much. they have a nice pond in the side yard and lots of room in the yard.
is it bad to have them in with the horses?

Thanks, i will make sure i always have pees. lol

Great information..So if they usually like to leave the nest area within 24 hrs, what should i do sense she has eggs that will hatch up to 8 days..I think only 2 eggs are hers and the other 8 are a different duck that was laying in her nest every day until i realized what was going on and I seperated them..Do you think If I keep it clean she will be ok to stay and hatch all of them?Im on day 20 today, getting excited..Well day 20 for the first 4 eggs I think, then the other 6 are due one a day for the remaining 6 days...I think..not sure
