So I wanted some chickens a little over a year ago and my wife found some BLR wyondottes for sale. When she showed me pictures of BLR's I fell in love! We went to a backyard breaker and bought 10 chicks and started out. We ended up with 8 wyondottes and 2 brahmas. The brahmas are gold laced hens and the wyondottes are 2 buff laced roo's, 3 buff laced hens, 1 BLR roo and 2 Blr hens all with beautiful lacing and all the right characteristics. We began looking at pics of silver laced wyondottes and wanted some so in haste went and bought 5 of them from someone else. I found out they came from a hatchery and weren't backyard bread. Their lacing isn't as define and they are a little smaller than the others plus 2 had single combs. 2 of my hens went broody and when they hatched I have ended up with 2 more silver laced with single combs. Will they always produce single combs when I use their eggs to hatch? Also I like the Blr better than any of the colors. Can anyone tell me what color roo to bread with what color hen? I have a couple gold laced hens and don't know how I ended up with them? At the time I had all my chickens together but now have separated the roosters and given them each a few ladies. I would like to know what color ladies to put with what color roo to produce what color chicks?

First get a copy of the Standard of Perfection and study the breeds you have as well as the first sections on characteristics and definitions, etc.
Enjoy your birds.
Set up pens for the individual color varieties you have.
Pen 1). Keep the BLR together. You should continue to get BLR. Since this is your favorite, you will soon have a few more. Pick only your best typed and colored birds to be your breeders.

Pen 2). Pick the best typed Buff Laced cock to put with the Buff Laced hens. You should continue to get Buff Laced depending on the genetic background.

Pen 3). For the Silver Laced with the single comb. Since some of the offspring had Wyandotte combs, you have a single comb carrier in your roosters. Do not hatch eggs from your single combed birds unless you plan to cull the chicks or grow them out for the freezer. Only breed the true rose-combed birds. Pick your best to type colored cock to go with the nicest SL hens. You don't say how many cocks/roosters you have. You may need to test hatch if you have more than one to see which cock is a single comb carrier. Pick the nicest typed birds for this pen that also show the closest color to the SOP.

Pen 4). This is everything else...you can allow a nice tempered rooster to be with this egg laying flock. Don't hatch from this group.. These are your eggs for kitchen and family.

The Gold laced Brahma hens gave you some gold laced Wyandotte cross chicks. Since you don't have a GL brahma cock then put these hens in you layer flock in Pen 4.
