All I know is that the chick is born free of the disease since it is not transmitted through the egg. It is very common and chances are the chicken will be exposed during its life. The vaccine is not 100% since the disease changes and there are different strains out there but will be effective if the strain it is exposed to is encountered. It has a very nominal fee. Each owner would have to decide and do their own research to determine if they would want to do it. Myself, I haven't seen a downside and if I would of had the choice, mine would be vaccinated. Just my opinion, I am not a vet-I don't even play one on tv.
