Questions about not recommended Mareck Vaccine

All I know is that the chick is born free of the disease since it is not transmitted through the egg. It is very common and chances are the chicken will be exposed during its life. The vaccine is not 100% since the disease changes and there are different strains out there but will be effective if the strain it is exposed to is encountered. It has a very nominal fee. Each owner would have to decide and do their own research to determine if they would want to do it. Myself, I haven't seen a downside and if I would of had the choice, mine would be vaccinated. Just my opinion, I am not a vet-I don't even play one on tv.

The reason you got the flu when you either 'had' the vaccine, or had 'been around someone who has had the vaccine' is that
'your' flu was a different strain from that in the vaccine.
The CDC takes their very best guess as to 'which' strains of flu (there are hundreds!) might be prevalent that particular year,
and it makes the vaccine for those particular flu strains. If there is another strain present in 'your' environment.............yes,
you can get THAT particular flu.............but it will NOT be the killed flu strain in that years vaccine.

Too many people 'believe' they can get the flu from the vaccine.....................
Please don't pass along incorrect info which you believe to be true.
The flu, in it's many strains, kills something like 36,000 people in this country each year.

I repeat.......you cannot get the flu from the vaccine.
It is your best defense against 'getting' the flu!
God help us if this H1N1 mutates and we do NOT have a vaccine yet!!

I would think that since you do not have the same issues as a commercial chicken farmer (overcrowding=weakened immunity, etc.... etc.....) that is why the company is recommending you not get the vaccine. It is less likely your birds would get sick since they would be a backyard flock and not exposed to the same stressful conditions.

In other words, I would not worry about it.

I realize the problem with the flu vaccine. I have done much research on the subject of vaccinations, thank you. In most cases (note the most) the risks outweigh the benefits.

I also have a hard time believing that in this day and age, with our improved hygiene and improved healthcare that any virus would wipe out 1/4 of the world's population.

Birds over one year rarely come down with Marek's. If it's gong to show it usually shows up between 12 & 22 weeks.

About birds shedding from vaccines, after the IB vaccine, birds are said to shed for 10 days to a fortnight.

I don't know about a quarter of the world's population....that's as maybe, I don't know the statistics.....a virus is very easily carried.
It takes a bit more than improved hygene & healthcare to stop it spreading. It takes very serious biosecurity & luck to stop a virulent virus. People standing in close proximity, a sneeze, from hand to objects. It is very hard to stop a virus spreading.​

Oh boy, I'll pass your beliefs along to the epidemiologist I work with (I am a nurse)
He'll get quite a chuckle.

My posts are way off the subject of the Merek's vaccine, but too important for me to ignore.
If someone learns something from my post, I'll take the flack...........
That being said.......this is my final post on the subject.........

"Improved hygiene" (and overuse of antibiotics) are actually part of the reason why we HAVE super bugs!
And "health care" can only do so much!
There is nothing, and I repeat for emphasis, NOTHING we have to fight a virus except for our own immune system.......
and the 'best guess' vaccines, which stimulate a proper response in our immune system.
Much of the world's population has neither good hygiene NOR access to health care!

I am not trying to be melodramatic here.............but,
the very real possibility of the end of life on Earth are currently twofold..............
Nuclear war being the first, and mutated viruses being the second.
Remember, 36,000 people die each year, in this country alone, from 'normal' flu strains.......and we 'do' currently
'have' "improved hygiene" and "improved health care".
An all powerful, mutated virus is probably going to be the world's worse nightmare.
I would seriously re-think your apparent comfort level with hygiene and health care............

I fear too many people 'believe' what they 'think' to be true.........and nothing
the facts show will make them 'believe' their 'truths' any less.
