Questions about Quail Housing

My quail are 4 weeks old. I'm looking at moving them out into the yard. I've got a rabbit hutch I was going to house them in. The rabbit hutch sets directly on the ground with no bottom for the "run" portion.

Questions are:
Do I have to raise the "run" off the ground? I'm going to have hardware cloth surrounding the whole thing buried a foot down. Plus I've put hardware cloth around the whole inside of the run so nothing can get it's hands inside.

IF I can leave it on the ground, what would be best to put in the run? Sand, pea gravel or mulch?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Well i think it wuold be best to raise it off the ground so that the predators won't have an easy catch, also I have been nagging my dad to get those!! You are so lucky

The cage will be predator proof. 1/4 in hardware cloth. sides staked out and down a foot. Plus it will be in the middle of my huge chicken run behind a 6ft fence

i would raise them off the ground unless they have really small wire on the ground like 1/2 inch
