i have a few questions about raising emus im going to get one ethier this summer or next summer. how tall of a fence i get a foot or two of snow can it sleep in a barn. when it is a baby can it sleep in a warm barn or should it sleep inside im ok with eather. what should i feed i think i can order some baby emu starter but should i feed it more variety of food like greens. will i see if its a girl or boy amedantly with the bulls eye and the tree thing or does it take a while. i read that there nice but ill ask you are they mean like a ostrich or nice. can you just have one or will it get lonely because i can only have one. when it gets older how big should the fences in area be realy big or small also im raising it from egg any good incubators you would recomend. thanks for the help

Emus need:
  • Heated barn in winter or cool weather
  • A buddy. You'll need at least two
  • Lots of room
  • The bulls eye never shows up by candling an egg. It shows up when you crack an egg to see if it's fertile. Do not crack the egg. Buy 3 or 4 eggs to incubate and candle them on day 8 and 14. Remove any that don't develop.
  • I have been chased across an animal sanctuary in Australia by an emu so personally I don't find them nice. If you handled it lots it would be though.
Also.... grammar, please....

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

I've never had emu but find them interesting.

You could try posting over on this forum to reach other members that have raised emu:
Ostriches, Emu, Rheas

Best of luck to you!

However. Birds come with responsibilities. You can't get just one. Even a duck will need constant company from a human.
Why not try quail if your space is limited? You can keep 2 or 3 in a rabbit hutch. You can't keep only one bird. Even if it imprints on you.

i have three ducks i also have 20 chickens
Why isn't one of those your pets then?
If keeping a bird as a pet you need to take into consideration that if it's a house pet it will be alone during the day. Being alone can cause feather picking, being bored, and cause really unhappy birds.
You could consider raising 2 birds of your own from an egg. You might try quail, turkeys, ducks, chickens, geese, guinea fowl, or pheasants.
Emus are too difficult for a beginner.
