I have a young rooster, about 4 weeks at the moment, he is a red sex link and I know he is a male as the males and females are different colours. I have a few simple questions i'm sure a few of you can answer.

When they are moved outside with my other layers what should he be fed on, is the layers pellets they are on ok for him, I see it almost impossible to keep his food separate as they will all share the same coop.

Also I have read about people keep roosters in cages and stuff, will he be ok not in a cage, and out ranging with the females?

Finally when I collect the eggs will they still be ok to eat?

Many thanks to everyone who reads and helps.

all our hens and roosters all eat layer mash. they do fine, I have 2 roosters that are 5 and 6 years old. collect the eggs every day and put in the fridge, and eat them! if it is hot outside you will want to collect twice a day.

Hello! It's good to have a rooster because they look out for the girls. Sometimes when they grow up and the testosterone hits, they get too agressive though, so just be observant and watch how he treats your girls.

The eggs will be just fine to eat. Just collect them daily and, like Toby mentioned, put them in the fridge.

All chickens, male or female love to free range, so caging is not necessary unless you have a special reason, as I've mentioned like, roo is too violent when mating with hens, or too mean towards you or your family.

And, yes, he can eat whatever you feed the ladies.
