Questions about using sand

Thanks for the info! How does the sand in your run do in the winter? Does it get packed down from all of the water?
I'm glad you brought up using hay because I used straw last winter and it was a mess! I have a lot of questions now. I hope you don't mind.

The sand stays dry, mainly because I wrap my run in clear vinyl shower curtains. This keeps out the snow and the cold wind. I put down straw on top of the sand, as the ducks don't like sand, and that did make a mess. By the end of the winter, the layers of hay created a stinky mess. I had to remove all the hay (which had now become serious muck) and I brought in 2 yards of sand. This winter I am thinking of covering a portion of the sand with weedblock, and put the hay on that. This should keep the hay from mixing in with the sand.

I buy my sand in bulk from a local hardware center. You can also buy it from quarries or cement dealers. I put in 3 yards of sand, which is 6000 lbs. That would have been 120 50lb bags, which would be $400 from the local blue or orange big box store. Buying in bulk it was $90. I have access to a dump trailer, so getting it home was no issue. So if you need more than a couple of bags, consider checking around for delivery from a landscape company etc.

As for the type of sand, the courser is it, the better it will drain, and is less likely to turn to mud. Good luck! Sand was the best upgrade I have made to the coop.

The times the sand ends up damp, which is mainly just around the edges of the run because my roof overhang isn't that much, I still scoop poop with the kitty scoop as I do inside the coop. No trouble there. My sand is about 5" deep in the run so it drains wonderfully. I got a 1/2 yard load in our truck from our local nursery for about $10 and spent a couple days shoveling it in. I dont have a super big chicken facility so my cost was much less than some have to pay to adequately cover their ground. This winter I think I may wrap the sides of the run that get the most weathering in clear plastic or the vinyl shower curtains as I read above in an effort to keep it drier and warmer in the run. I did use vinyl flooring up the sides of the coop just because I had enough to do so. I adhered it with contact cement as mine wasn't the peel and stick kind.

I have small coops off my 10 x 10 and 10 x 20 foot runs............on a couple of them I use sand in the coop because I have roosts in there that the birds love to use in bad weather,
under those roost, I put sand to catch the droppings and makes it easy to scoup out and change with a scoop shovel. What I do is use vinyl floor covering, (the type you do not
have to glue down, under the sand....makes it easy to clean. After cleaning, I spray it down with liquid Sevin, as an extra guard against mites,,,etc etc etc hope this helps.....
