Hello Folks,
Maybe this should be in the "coops" section but was wondering about how fellow San Diegans built their coop floor? I've seen "self-cleaning coops" on the internet that have hardware cloth for their coop floor, and I'm guessing that they live in mild climates as well (that is, no snow, no harsh weather, moderate temps day and night).

We are building a coop for our chickadees and my husband (builder) wants a solid floor onto which he can lay laminate, then whatever substrate (sand, perhaps).

I think hardware cloth would be better so the poop can fall to the ground below and it'd be easier to keep the coop dry if we were to hose it out.
So far, it's sits on a base that's 4′ x 6′; the run will be about 20 sq feet.

I think we could still put pine shavings down on hardware cloth, then if it does get cold, put a solid floor into the coop onto which we can put pine shavings. I've asked a few friends with chickens and they think both ways are fine.

Thoughts for this newbie? We have 4 chicks; I plan on putting a thermometer and a webcam in the coop once it's done.
Thank you!
