This is a really useful book for getting started with showing, even if you're too old for 4H:

I tell my 4H kids to leave birds home if they're less than 20 weeks. At 20 weeks, they will still be young and probably not pin well unless the judge has nothing else to work with. I've had kids bring birds in the 18 week range when it was the only chicken they had available for showmanship. 6 months + is better, and the older birds will have a clear advantage.

I like to use Orvis soap (typical livestock soap) but any mild soap is fine for washing.

You don't have to sell.

If you want to know what your birds should look like, I suggest attending a show before you exhibit or getting your hands on an APA Standard of Perfection. Your library may be able to get you a copy (if an older one), but if you're going to show you'll want a copy of your own eventually.
