This year I had chicks/juveniles from April till now and gave them organic chick (grower) feed from the start. The layers got their egg shells back in tiny pieces and oyster shells as much as they liked. And could free range at least a few hours every day. The shells stayed good all the time.
Since the chicks have grown, I put layer feed in a separate bowl out. Started this carefully on limitation when they became 3+ months old. I only see the laying hens eat from the layer. Never saw the mothers (not laying) and the juveniles eat from the layer pellets.
I don’t limit it anymore and they eat more of the layer. I do see the hens that moult and stopped laying eat from the layer too. It feels good now to offer them a choice and I’m confident the chickens know best what’s good for them.
I have 2 early ‘moulters’ who look great again. They give me a few eggs a week. So we stopped eating omelettes. It’s just enough for boiled eggs on Sunday and cooking/baking.
