The type of brooder shown here I am curious if the birds get burned or killed on the unprotected lights. Also for people using this type of brooder what size light bulbs do you use? A regular 250 volt heat lamp or a lesser voltage light bulb.

I'm sorry to sound ungrateful, but I am seeking an answer to a question about a specific type of brooder, an electric light brooder originally made in the 1940's in Ohio. I'm not looking for brooders using electric lights. An electric light brooder is a 4x4 plywood box with light bulbs on the inside of the upside down box. The chicks are directly exposed to the bulbs. The bulbs aren't in a brooder clamp lamp.

Use this link to see the exact brooder I am describing.

OK, I missed that!

Now it makes sense!

I'm not sure how you would keep the chicks out of the bulbs.

I know even a 5 watt nightlight bulb can issues....
