Questions On Guinea Fowl

  1. How can I tell if a guinea is male or female?
  2. What is the male to female ratio?
As adults they can be sexed by the female's call that is often referred to as a "buckwheat".

The preferred ratio of males to females is 1 to 1.

I never recommend having fewer than 10 guineas. They are a flock bird and do best in the company of their own kind. They have different behaviors than any other kinds of poultry.

So if I get 10 then I should get 5 females and 5 males?
That would be ideal. The only way you are going to get sexed guineas is by buying adults. Bringing in a flock of adult guineas presents its own problems. It will probably take at least 6 weeks of confinement for them to understand that they have a new home.
