I'm hoping to start incubating some coturnix eggs in the next week or two - date depends on exactly where I get them from. I'm wanting to keep a very small number (less than 10) in two cages semi-indoors (closed in back porch with no heat or a/c - just windows to open or close for ventilation). The cages are 24"x15" and 36"x16". I'm wanting them mostly for eggs but would like to be able to breed some to hatch again once I have the set-up for minor expansion outdoors. How many should I start with of each? I'm thinking of keeping 1 roo and 3 or 4 hens in the larger pen and just a couple of hens in the smaller. Will that work or do I need a totally different setup? If I have to build a small indoor hutch I can using primarily scraps from building our most recent chicken coop, but I'm hoping to take the easy way out.
