Hi Guys,
My first Broody hen hatched 5 chicks last Wed. We'll probably keep these since they are our first. My question is with the next chicks hatched here ( I can't keep them all as much as I would like to we are at 55 chickens now :S) When do you take chicks from hen? Does the hen get upset?
Thanks
Rhonda

In my experience, usually around the age of 6 weeks, the hen will no longer "mother" the chicks. She will slowly wean them TOWARDS independence. By that age they really are old enough to find their own food, and find a way to stay warm. Its very sad to see the slow learner chick actually be pecked and chased away by its mom.
