I don't quite understand how you are holding the bird in the first picture. Is you hand along the back and the thumb holding the one wing while the outside fingers are holding the other wing?

Your bird seems comfortable with the hold. I've seen the overhand hold demonstrated as a way to hold a pigeon for bathing. Doesn't seem to bother them either and racing pigeon fanciers would not do anything to injure the wings of their birds.

ETA: that's different than picking up by the outer parts of the wing as described before and that sounds abusive.

I normally pick my birds up with my hands over their wings and I hug them like a football, sort of...lol.

But for treating them for mites...I slide my hand up their backs and hold their wings back in an extended position. I do not support the weight of my oegb and crosses because their so small, but I only hold the larger sizes like that without support if they are upside down on my hand. I have a large kennel and I'll put a cardboard out to set the bigger girls on to support their weight while I hold them like that. I haven't had an injured bird yet out of all the birds I do. I'm going to have to catch a chicken to see if I do ever use the over hand way...lol.
