In the morning we are going to pick up our new chicks. We've never had any, but we're already achickted (addicted). It's bad...last night we both dreamed about chicks.

Anyway, we plan on getting 3 (up from 2). We got a 30 gallon storage bin for them. Inside measurements are about 15 x 26. Once we set the feeder and water in there the place really shrinks.

Will this be large enough for 3 chicks? Or should we go get something else? What do you think the minimum L x W should be?

Thanks in advance,

It might be fine for a few days but they grow quickly. I have 15 four week olds in a vey large box and they will have to move out this weekend. Are sure you just want 3??

Good luck!

Thanks.
It's actually a bit bigger. It 26" long... but I still think small.

Actaully, we would like more, but we're not sure how it's going to go. LOL. We live in town on little lots. I think the tractor only holds 3.

otherwise, if we had yard enough and a bigger coop, we'd go for a dozen. But at least 3 is more than the two we had originally intended. We'll see what happens tomorrow when we go pick them out. LOL

I have 4 chicks in a rabbit cage that is roughly 2' x 3'. They are 6 weeks old tomorrow, and they still seem to have enough room. They do grow very quickly, though. It's always better to have too much room than not enough. But for only three chicks.........Wow! What willpower!

Celtic,

haha. We're up from two already since you suggested we didn't understand chicken math. LOL. And the wife is now suggesting I get crackin' building a good-sized coop that can house at least 5 or 6. Tomorrow will be the true test of will power. Right now we are dealing with abstract chicken math. Tomorrow it will be real numbers.

I think we've decided to start them in there and then to turn a 3/4 bath upstairs into their own brooder room. Hopefully, simply covering and taping the drain of the shower stall will be enough to keep the room and plumbing safe.

Today is Good Friday and tomorrow is Chicken Saturday. Woohoo!!!
