Quick question re ILT vaccine

I need an answer quickly if anyone knows; we're having a rodeo here trying to catch all our 47 birds, get them calmed down, and administer vaccine today. Vaccine directions say you have to hold the eye open, put the drop in, and wait til they swallow; we have two hours to do all of them, and some of them are REALLY wild!! Somebody told me you can put it in the nostril too, but I can't find anything in the vaccine instructions re that. Does anyone know if you can put it in the nostril? We're almost done catching them, so will do vaccine in another couple hours after they calm down.

YES you can put it in the nostril. Use the same amount as for the eye. When you put it in the eye it may irritate the eye and make you think something is wrong.

Did you get the CEO or the other kind of vaccine?

I'm not sure what the CEO is. We got a modified live virus vaccine that's supposed to be very mild. We still haven't tried it cause we still haven't caught all our birds; four left; to be continued tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

You got the good stuff then. CEO=Chick Embryo Origin and will cause the birds to be carriers for life.

ADDITIONAL VACCINE QUESTION: Hope you catch this without me having to do a new post; but was reading throught the stuff the State gave us re this virus and vaccine. It says the vaccine should stain the bird's tongue if done properly; is this true? It doesn't say anything about that in the directions that came with it. If the vaccine isn't done properly; eg, the bird thrashes around or something and we're not sure if he/she got the whole dose, do we do it over again? Will it stain the tongue if done through the nostril? Also I know you're supposed to sterilize as much as possible afterward, but what if we can't completely clean up the whole barn? Will temperature, weather etc eventually kill the remaining virus? We know we'll have to vaccinate any new birds we get. Lastly, should we re-administer the vaccine in six weeks for all our birds? Supplier says yes; directions don't say anything; State info says vaccinate pullets in ten weeks from date of first vaccination. Help!

PLEASE BEFORE YOU USE THAT MODIFIED LIVE VIRUS TALK TO PETER AT TRI-STATE VET SUPPLY. He is a chicken expert. There is a very good killed virus vaccine made from the tissue. The modified live virus can infect your birds.

I would not recommend you use that. TriState Vet Supply is on the web and so is the number.

That is what a vaccine does, infect the bird or human with a low dose of the disease to build antibodies in the system so it can recognise a full blown infection.

Even in a healthy flock it will show titters for Marek's and Cocci for sure plus probably a lot of resp. diseases as well if one was to run tests on the flocks. Stress is usually what brings on the diseases whether it is a change in the weather, overcrowding or a number of other things that can cause stress.

That was a year ago. Our flock recovered and never looked back. (knock on wood). I would recommend Peter to anyone.

The thing that really bothers me about these forums is that some people think they are know-it-alls and when someone has very VERY good advice to give there is ALWAYS someone who thinks they are "better," there to shoot it down. THIS is not the purpose of these posts.

It is a matter of rising KNOWLEDGE that the spreading plague of ILT among flocks has been CAUSED in great part by the use of MODIFIED LIVE VIRUS vaccines in smalltown flocks.

Those vaccines infected the flocks and caused them to be carriers. Most states do not allow you to sell or transfer any live bird at any time after administering a vaccine like that.

Why then, don't SOME people do research before shooting down perfectly good advice that could HELP someone. I do not need to be treated as if I am a dummy. I know what a vaccine is for. I also know there are several types of ILT vaccine. I KNOW ALL ABOUT THIS VACCINE. There is a safe vaccine for small home flocks.

Does ANYONE know that the MODIFIED LIVE VIRUS can and MOST LIKELY WILL KILL a percentage of your flock if you use it??? READ!!! I did.
