i have a buff orp mom to 4 mixed bag of chicks, they are only 1.5 weeks old. i have tried keeping them separate from my 7 other hens but alas they way things are currently setup here, it's proving impossible. the fence that took my husband days to build is wide enough for the chicks to slip through. it seem momma is doing a good job at keeping the other hens away, even she made it over the fence yesterday - not sure how.

heres the question… what if the chicks get the hens feed (laying pellets) - they will, and vice versa.

and i don't believe the chick starter they are on has meds in it so i think the possibility for them to get cocci may be high. not that my other hens have ever exhibited any signs of it but i can just see them (chicks) getting sick. i am placing a feed order today, should i order meds for them just in case? if so, any recommendations?

thanks!

Our hens always eat our chick feed and our chicks always get some layer pellets. It's not the end of the world.

I'm not sure about medicated feed, but I've never used it and my chicks have been fine. Some swear by it, others despise it.

Good luck either way!
