I'm about to place my order to Mcmurray, the free chick box was automatically checked......I'm on the Fence!

From McMurray, the free chick is usually a male.
They seem to mostly send out new, rare, or unusual breeds for the mystery chick.

I would say to get the mystery chick, but have a backup plan of making him into fried chicken if he doesn't work out well in your flock.

I’ve only received male chicks as the “free” surprise chick. I have declined this “surprise” ever since. If you do not mind getting a random breed cockerel, then go for it.

One year we got a Fayoumi cockerel, adorable! He started crowing at 28 days of age, and we rehomed him as a youngster. Another year it was a RIR cockerel, a total jerk who made a nice dinner. Go for it!
