from what ive read the pom or tolouse might be your best bet, ive heard some good things about africans too but i think their massive size and noise level would be very intimidating for a beginner, they just make me think of them as the mastif of the goose world, huge, loud, messy and rather intimidating, but in the right hands they are big mush balls lol.

might want to check out purely poulty too, they have buffs which are another supposedly wonderfull beginner breed, sebastopol and pilgrims were also on my list of "first geese" because of their supposed easy going nature.

i know of all the breeds chinese (of any color) have the reputation of being the most agressive.
however ALL are individuals, for every Sweet chinese theres an agressive sebbie, for every loud african, theres a quiet one, ect.

ALL breeds of geese can be very agressive during the breeding season too.

were getting a pair of buffs from purely.

I have 14 Chinas and have had no aggression problems with them...I also have 2 Poms that I am totally smitten with...the Chinas are loud when alarmed about something odd but otherwise are pretty quiet and content...the Poms seem very calm and more quiet...geese are a real hoot...one of my Brown China girls likes to get right up in my face and chatter when I am bending and filling feeders...that could be intimidating to some...they all follow me all over the place talking about me and what I am doing...silly gooses...

My chinese gander is a real hoot. he is SO LOUD when anything happens, and lets me know when anyone is coming up, even walking! He also will chase and bite my toddler, and my 5 year old is TERRIFIED of him, and screams and cries if he's even getting close. and he will really bite her if he can. I have to put him in the garden when my girls play outside. my son isn't scared of him, but he's 7, and not really afraid of anything. I love mr. goose, but if I could magically transform him into a pilgrim, or a buff, i would. He's extra aggressive in the spring and fall, and not so bad in the winter.

I've not had any of those, but I've heard/read that chinese and toulouse are aggressive. I'd go with the poms.
