Hi, I plan on getting chickens. I was wondering on which chickens are quiet and good layers. I have new hampshires on my mind. Are they a good choice. The last chickens we had were very loud so I want to go for something quieter. Thanks

For quiet hens that are good egg-layers, I like Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Delawares, and NH Reds. Also, if you are mainly interested in the eggs, think about what colors you like, and if you want different colors of eggs in your basket. Easter Eggers can be quiet and gentle and lay blue, green, pink eggs depending on their parents (they are mixed to make different colored eggs). Can't think of any quiet white or tinted egg-layers off the top of my head right now. The hens will be much quieter without a rooster, too.

Maybe someone else on here has some more ideas?

Quiet productive egg layers are also what I was looking for and ended up getting Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps and Light Brahmas. Depending on your weather, if it's hot most of the time definitely skip the Light Brahmas.
So far all of my girls have been super quiet and very docile. As far as egg production- it's still a waiting game...mine are only 10wks old. Breed forums tell you a lot, so whatever suggestions are offered to you, look them up to see if they are what you're lookin for. Happy searching!

Good laying breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm, gentle, and relatively quiet (as chickens go) include Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Sussex, and Faverolles. I've had all of these breeds over the past 50 years (and many others as well), and (outside of Silkies which are poor layers), Brahmas are probably the quietest breed I've ever had. If eggs are a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. Speaking from experience, I would avoid New Hampshires as mine were very noisy. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
