Quiet Breeds That Do Fairly Well In Heat

Is it legal for you to own chickens? Keep in mind, that even the quietest hen can raise a fuss when it comes to laying her egg each day. I have one Australorp that barely utters a cluck all day, but come egg time, she likes to carry on quite loudly.

I'll do a double check on that, and yeah, even the quietest chicken in the world is loud time to time!
I'm sure the law won't be a huge problem, mostly the neighbors that like to lie to get us in trouble.

Lucky for me, I have a fairly large backyard so the coop can be far off from them!

If it's against the law to own chickens where you live, don't have them. If someone complains, you will lose your birds, and they will most likely be euthanized rather than rehomed. If it's not legal for you to own a certain type of animal, and a neighbor complains to law enforcement about it, they didn't lie to get you in trouble. You got yourself in trouble by not doing your research on local codes and ordinances. It would be really sad for you to get attached to animal, and then be forced to give it up.

Yeah..I found out I can't own chickens legally...

My neighborhood will euthanize them...they won't even give you time to let you find them a new home which angers me so much!

I'd better wait the 2 - 3 years till I move to the country..chickens don't need their lives lost over my mistakes.

I know all about having to be patient and waiting for the right time and place to have a flock. I'm a military wife. We finally found the right area for our family, and the perfect property came up for sale at just the right time. It's just outside of city limits, so I have no restrictions regarding poultry at all. The best part of all is that if I have extra eggs, I just need to put a sign at the end of my driveway and I can sell them.

I agree with the above. Some of our members at BYC who live in HOAs that prohibit chickens do have "stealth chickens", but unless they are "house chickens" (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/299187/people-with-house-chickens), at some point some neighbor is going to inevitably notice them and report you; and it's hard to hide "stealth chickens" when you have a chicken coop that looks like a chicken coop.
