Quiet guineas??

Thanks everyone for your replies.... I've been going in more often to 'listen'.... usually I am in there just to feed them, tell them I'm not a monster and stroll by to gather eggs from the chicken coop next door.... the only time I did hear them making any noise briefly was like a sound of someone sitting on an old squeaky bed (like the old metal springs) but they didn't do it long enough for me to pick out boy/girl sounds.

I've been listening over and over to a recording from the net of a cock and hen and can tell the difference now I think..... perhaps in a week or two I'll be hearing more of that because they stated that between 8-10 weeks is when it becomes more distinct.

I just went out again and I heard one of the pearl grays go "AWK"....... "AWK" very sharply and quick with some little chirping after.... I'm thinking that might be a male...... one white pearl made a fairly similar sound but not as loud nor as refined. The rest are just like little chirp type sounds.... so maybe I'll have 3 gals and 2 boys..... if so, that is ok isn't it?

They're not like turkeys that you only have one or two per 10 gals is it? or like chickens with the roo/hen ratio??

Tammy if you want to hear your little Guinea Hens saying "butt-crack" (lol) then try catching a couple or 3 of your Guineas, put them in a cage and put it out of sight but within earshot of the others... the Hens will normally start calling to the others within a few minutes. They will scream and struggle like you are tearing their hide off in strips when you catch them, just to prepare you... lol. If you STILL don't hear any "butt-cracking" after trying this then it could be possible that you have all males...

Ok, I'm going out to try this right now. I'll let you know what happens... lol

If I'm not back in 1/2 hour...somehow contact my hubby and tell him to come rescue me because from what I've read.....they can be evil.... haha..

Um, I don't think I'll try to pick them up again....that was pretty intense! Especially since I haven't handled them at all since they were born.

If someone would have been watching me try to catch one in the pen, they probably would have said it reminded them of a greased wild boar catching contest.... lol

As for the sounds....guess they are too young yet .....didn't call to one another at all. I even left them for about 15 minutes like that and just little tiny peeps is all....

I think I'll just have to wait for awhile. Like you all say, they will make noise soon enough. haha.

Thanks again!

I just about peed myself with all the "butt-cracking"! Then picturing Tammy out trying to catch a greased wild boar disguised as a guinea sent me over the edge. I'm laughing so hard I'm crying and my son wants to know what's so funny.

Still laughing...

Mine are still too little for the "butt-crack" but I can't wait now. I picked one up the other day, and it just glared at me and didn't even make a peep.

Hmmm....quiet guineas....not for long I'm sure. However, when mine do sound off I usually just yell "guinea shut up" and they do most of the time. Of course I have tame guineas too
