Thanks everyone for your replies.... I've been going in more often to 'listen'.... usually I am in there just to feed them, tell them I'm not a monster and stroll by to gather eggs from the chicken coop next door.... the only time I did hear them making any noise briefly was like a sound of someone sitting on an old squeaky bed (like the old metal springs) but they didn't do it long enough for me to pick out boy/girl sounds.
I've been listening over and over to a recording from the net of a cock and hen and can tell the difference now I think..... perhaps in a week or two I'll be hearing more of that because they stated that between 8-10 weeks is when it becomes more distinct.
I just went out again and I heard one of the pearl grays go "AWK"....... "AWK" very sharply and quick with some little chirping after.... I'm thinking that might be a male...... one white pearl made a fairly similar sound but not as loud nor as refined. The rest are just like little chirp type sounds.... so maybe I'll have 3 gals and 2 boys..... if so, that is ok isn't it?
They're not like turkeys that you only have one or two per 10 gals is it? or like chickens with the roo/hen ratio??
