Quiet guineas??

I rarely hear my guineas making any type of noise..... is this normal?

My chickens and turkeys make more noise than them .... and when I mean rarely, I mean a little chirp here and there..... even my frogs in my little pond are making noise...lol

I have 5 that are almost 8 weeks old.

Enjoy it while it lasts... lol won't be long before they start sounding off at anything and everything. All it takes is one to discover their voice and they all chime in. Just wait 'til they get let out to free range

I thought my adult Guineas had gotten into my brooder stall and went to check only to have my 8 week old keets look at me like I was disturbing THEM!

They were having a party in there, I swear. With 14 making all that racket it just sounded like grown ups to me. The adults were out behind the barn wondering where the party was.

I hear the babies a lot more now than my adults. Mine have found their voices and are using them with glee!

Well I did a test....I went in there and sat on a chair outside the pen for a good 1/2 hr or so.

Pretty much just realized that they are like chickens on some type of hypo-drug... Lord have mercy.

My presence seemed to bother them and they would go back and forth constantly trying to find a way out so I couldn't stare at them...lol... looked like a ping pong or tennis game....

I did hear one of them squak like once or twice.... a quick "awck" sound.... the other ones just tiny little peeping like when they were a few days old. Nothing loud at all and not much like I've read people posting about them.

I don't think they like me....ha.... back and forth, up on the roost, down again, back and forth, back and forth.....

I was really hoping I'd hear that 'butt crack' sound that you'all keep saying...lol

Here they are....not sure boy or girls or even how to tell if they aren't making noises...

Mine were about three months old, maybe a bit more before they started realizing they had a voice ... and it hasn't stopped since. We hadn't moved at the time and they were a big no no in town. I was sooo happy they stayed quiet until after we moved.

Tammy if you want to hear your little Guinea Hens saying "butt-crack" (lol) then try catching a couple or 3 of your Guineas, put them in a cage and put it out of sight but within earshot of the others... the Hens will normally start calling to the others within a few minutes. They will scream and struggle like you are tearing their hide off in strips when you catch them, just to prepare you... lol. If you STILL don't hear any "butt-cracking" after trying this then it could be possible that you have all males...

I have a bunch of 5 to 7 week old keets that are learning to sound the alarm, chiming in with the adult Guineas that gripe and yell at me when I'm out collecting their eggs from a nest near the keet pen. (I'm also hearing some off key squeaky "butt-cracking" coming from that pen already too, it's pretty funny listening to them practicing, lol). My free range flock hates me with a passion right now (UNLESS I'm carrying a scoop of feed) because I have not let them brood any eggs this year and they have been laying since Jan, so I get yelled at every time they see me, lol.

Guineas are normally wild/flighty natured, they don't like people touching or holding them unless you've handled them A LOT from day one and have spoiled them rotten with treats (and sometimes THAT doesn't even work!), so don't take it personally that they seem to not like you, lol. I can get mine to come close to me and sometimes eat from my hand, and sometimes the low bird in the pecking order will perch on my arm and eat safely from the feed scoop without getting picked on, but gawd forbid should I reach out and touch any of them, they scatter like cockroaches, lol.

My Keets from Peeps are saying in a very clear high pitched tone their BuckWheats..... MINE say Buck Wheat......

They are now six weeks? I have to go to the calender to see.

Oh and they are out in the coop finally. My son came up and finished out the back panel so the big kids can have more space and the Littluns are out of their brooder cage finally. This will only be till they are too big to go through the chainlink. But this means my coop is coming together.... Woo Hoo

When they reach puberty and their voices change (lol)... you will hear "butt-crack"

Oh when they start making noise you will sometimes wish they had never started.

Mine are 4 months old and the only time they are quiet now is hardly EVER. They will scream at everything. It aggravates everyone around my house but I love it. Good luck.
