Cartoon Animals: Grading for Assignment One

Feel free to read everyone else's grades and look at their drawings to see what I said/meant. This will help you learn more.

Bella1210 -- I can see that you are younger and/or less experienced than the rest of us. Kudos to you for trying anyway!

SHAPES-- I can see that you tried! I would work on more variety, such as ovals, half-circles, etc. Also try and work on straighter lines on your squares and triangles. Practicing on graph paper or even lined paper would benefit you greatly. You may post some of your practice along with your next assignment. B-

ANIMAL-- Work on creating evenness in you ear and leg placement. Look at dogs/ or pictures of them so you can study the difference in chest and belly shape.

FarmCoe I think you will be fine without a drawing compass. I hope I can teach you lot's.

SHAPES--On your circles, try not to let your pencil bow out in certain spots, Also try not to shade more on the edges. Triangles- good, straight lines, but try different ones with bigger and smaller angles. Squares- work on these some more-- your lines could be straighter. I would suggest practicing with a ruler or on graph paper until you get a better feel. B+

ANIMAL-- If you could post a full body animal, that would be good too. There are many styles of cartooning; I like yours. Your ears are uneven, which creates appearance of more uneveness in the muzzle. Your eyes, too, are different. Otherwise, good job. A-

NixNoodleNumbat-- Good to see you here!

SHAPES-- some of your shapes are odd/irregular, but thats ok. On things like your heart and diamonds, the 2 sides are uneven. On things requiring straight lines you need some work. You would benefit from extra pra ctice on graph paper.I like your circle. On the oval, be careful of stray lines. B

ANIMAL-- Very Cute! Your anime work benefits you! You need to work on eveness a bit more- but its something we all struggle with. Try to add something to help the viewer define the creature... add whiskers for a cat, paws/claws for a bear, etc. A-

equinehugger3 -- You are fine. You are obviously a more advanced artist. I am impressed, and hope I can teach you something.

SHAPES-- Your circles are good, but careful of bumps. Triangles- good, but again, careful of bumps. Also, your lines could be a wee bit straighter, but dont worry about it too much. Your squares are good, but again, watch your lines. You could practice on graph paper if you wished, but it is not necessary.A

ANIMAL-- WOW! Very good. Be careful with those ears- make sure you can tell where the inside is and which way they are pointed. Also, the withers wouldn't slope so sharply- study a horse to get a better feel for that. A

DuckyGurl -- I love your unique idea!

SHAPES-- These are not too bad! On your circles, careful of stray lines and/or bumps. Cylinder- same as for circles. Make sure to keep the top and bottom circles nearly the same size. ON the rectangles, squares and triangles- you have mostly good, straight lines, but watch for bumps. Try different angled triangles too. A

ANIMAL-- Love it! The circle you have for the head- feel free to make it a complete shape in light pencil and erase later- that will help your shapes. Your eyes are uneven- same with the wings. The belly oval- need to work on your shape a bit. The legs are uneven. The feet look like they are sloping down- experiment with shapes until you feel it looks right. B-

TeriyakiChicken -- Welcome to my class!

SHAPES-- Very good. Even, straight lines, etc. Careful with bumps in your circles and triangles. A

ANIMAL-- The cat is good, keep in mind that since the head is on an angle the ears need to be too. On the bird, keep the wing ridging even. Nambroth's class would help your bird-drawing skills. B+

-- Hello! Nice to meet you! I havent seen you around before. I hope you enjoy my class.

SHAPES-- good- straight lines. You could do a few more simpler ones, like squares and equilateral triangles. A

ANIMAL-- Very Nice! I Love your use of the basic shapes! The fox is a little bit hard to define, but thats alright. If you add paws in the back I would suggest also doing so in the front. A

In reply to my grading:
I don't practice much. I should I'll start practicing more. That creature wasn't meant to be a cat or bear or anything. It looks exactly what it is. A Zyne. I made it up.
ETA: I need to stop arguing with the grading I get…
