Hello! I had chickens growing up, and up untill I was a teen and LOVED them (I used to be a member on this forum but that was like 15 years ago lol)
Back then we lived in the country with acres, and now me and my husband are purchasing our new home and finally I am going to get some backyard chickens (yay!), BUT I live much closer to neighbors now so I have new things to to think about that I didn't have to back then.
I actually ordered my chicks last week (they wont be here till july) I ordered 2 silkies, 1 barred rock, 1 buff orpington and 1 polish.

I'm hoping I didn't mess up with the polish, it was kind of a last minute thought to meet my minimum order. I never had this breed before growing up but always wanted to get one haha.
We have privacy fencing around all of the backyard. (I'm guessing the standard 6ft?) And have neighbors right on the other side of it. Do polish chickens fly well? I feel like I'm safe with the orpington and barred rock cause they're heavier breeds? (and silkies just hop basically hehe)

I could change my order if I need to. Or does clipping wings do a good job of keeping any chicken inside a 6ft fence? Did I pick good breeds that won't make too much noise?? (I know that can vary by chicken tho) Also how common is it for a hen to crow? I ordered all females and heard sometimes hens will crow without a rooster.

Thank you guys so much! Excited to be back on here :love

All chickens fly well with unclipped wings. If you put netting on the top of the run, not only will it keep them in, but it will also keep birds of pretty out! Welcome to BYC! Glad you could join the Flock! Let you know if you need anything!:wee:love:thumbsup:duc:clap:welcome:eek::celebrate:goodpost::highfive::woot

Thank you! Their coop and run will be covored, I'm not worring about them escaping that, but was hoping I could let them explore the backyard without going over the fence. How affective is clipping a chickens wings and them not being able to escape over a privacy fence? lol

Your welcome!
It depends on the chicken. Some are very inquisitive & quite determined. Some chickens can manage to fly even with both wings clipped.

Hum...A quite breed that doesn’t fly?
I think they call those...kittens!
(Just kiddin)
I have a 6’ fence that in three years none of my chickens have tried to go over. I see them checking it out but so far no problems. Be mindful of anything close enough to the fence that they can hop up on to then go over.
I have a very athletic LH and she could easily flutter fly to the top (clipped wings or not). They know the yard is safe and they have 1/3 acre to call there own. Each chicken is different so it’s hard to say. My noisest chicken is my Wyandotte. Overall my girls are quite. BUT the egg song that’s a different story!
Oh man, if they all get going at the same time WHOA!!
It sounds to me like you’re looking for pets so I would recommend EE’s. They (or mine does) have a squatter-build and mine can only get about 3’ off the ground. They are super sweet along with being pretty little things. Their egg colors are always a surprise too. Best wishes to you and your new feathered family.

I’m not sure about everyone else but when my birds are molting their wings feathers, they can’t fly but a little to none,so I’m assuming clipping could help, but I’ve never done it before. As far as crowing, there usually is an underlying reason hens crow, hormonal imbalance, and I guess you can say it doesn’t happen too frequently.
