my GF and i have taken our first steps in trying to quit. We started taking Chantix about 2 days ago and it seems to be working. Anyone whos smoked for years can tell you it's really hard to quit, the withdrawls alone will keep you smoking. Chantix is supposed to stop all of that and block the nicotine receptors ion your brain. Bad part is I actually like to smoke, I cant explain why I just do.

But I notice already i dont have any major cravings.....before it was like a strong urge that kept nagging and now it's not so bad, so hopefully the cravings go away and we'll quit. We could put the money to better use anyway and honestly i'm getting tired of standing outside to smoke in the cold, heat, rain etc.

that and I really want to be around to see my 6 yr old daughter grow up.

That is awesome Quad.

...........please update us on your progress with the Chantix......I plan on quitting myself soon....and will need help........is that an expensive aid? can't be more costly than smokin though......best of luck to you....................it is a hard hard thing to do.but sooooooo great when you do..... I know I did for 15 years.........someone should have slapped me silly when I picked it up again....... will pray you are both successful......

best of luck to you, hope it works. my husband had smoked for over 25 years and last year he got the flu terribly bad and couldn't even get out of bed let alone go outside to smoke. (no smoking inside our house!). that got him started and after about 6 weeks of him being extra cranky, he managed to stay quit.

i'm so proud of him. in 2 weeks it will be 1 year w/o smoking.

i hope it works for you! DH's doc gave him the Chantix but i don't think he really tried it. though he did carry it around with him everywhere for those 6 weeks. just in case i guess.

Good Luck to You and your GF

My Dad and a good friend both quit using Chantix. We are so so proud of them both - my Dad was smoking 2 - 3 packs a day for the last 40 years. I smoked for about 7 years and quit cold turkey about 3 years ago - the hardest thing I've ever done. I felt like I was an addict going through the stages of withdrawal. I wish now that I would have had the Chantix prescription back then, it might have been a little easier.
(Sometimes I still get cravings after a drink or two or when we are around others who smoke, but so far I have been able to resist the urge.)

A tip to those quitting - stay away from places that allow smoking, and also from people that you know who still smoke - take away the temptations especially in the beginning and remember you are adding years to your life because you are quitting now.

So glad to hear that you all are making good progress in your goals. It just breaks my heart that my older sister (68) has terminal lung cancer and is going through her second round of chemo, but she is still smoking. I'm not sure I would put myself through all that if I couldn't or wouldn't stop. It just seems like you're fighting against yourself. Anyway, keep up the good fight!

THAT'S GREAT GUAD, My dh and I smoked for probably 25 years ,we quit when he had his first heart surgery, probably 20 years ago, For some people it's easy for some it's not. Just take it one day at a time, the first 21 days is always the hardest, but you have LOTS of byc members pulling for you.

My SO keeps talking about quitting. So I'm interested in how hard it is, maybe I can get him to try it. I quit over 30 years ago, before I was twenty. I occasionally take a puff, but it only proves to me that I don't care to smoke.

Congrats! I quit almost 6 years ago.
It is hard to quit, but much harder to watch someone you love (in this case my mother) being diagnosed with lung cancer and dead in 3 weeks. Please stay strong in your resolve to see your daughter grown up.
