Quoll Attacks

I'm with Scrambled Egg.........on this one. I thought (boy...and I thought I had bad spellin').
Kind of like a coon,I use to think they were cute until they started killing my birds. Now every time I see one dead on the road, I say,"one less to worry about"

Flufnstuffs~FluffySilkies :

I also never heard of this animal.
I thought you mispelled something " Quolls '

Do you all have the havaheart traps over there?
We trap a lot of animals and relocate them.

Mostly Squirls & Chipmunks in the small cage and I cought 3 coons in the big cage.

My husband drove one coon 60 miles away :)
I told him that was a bit of an over kill.
I drove one coon the the area of the local dump.
I thought if he had lots to eat he would not come back.
:)

I'm giggling thinking about what was going through that coon's mind when he found himself transported from one place down to the local dump.

I can promise you that any predator I ever took to the dump never came back.

Cute little beast.
Sorry Roast, So so so glad he's your problem and not mine!!!

Cheers for the welcome!

These guys are cute - and that is what makes it so darn hard!!! People have said to me to just shoot any that come around, as they will keep coming back to the coup to get at the birds. Chickens are after all an easy meal for them! (even though they are protected - Country folks don't seem to pay attention to the fact your not s'posed to kill them! I should point out that I am a city girl that has relocated to the country!).

I hope I'm not jinxing myself here, but I haven't had any attacks since I reinforced the coup - now called Stalag Luft III! (see film The Great Escape)

I was going to respond to everyone in separate quoted posts - But that takes to long! So here goes;

*jjthink- cheers for posting that stuff about Quoll's! I guess I should have done that.

*gritstar- Tasmanian Devils are in my area, and aren't a problem. They generally stick to road kill, but will wear down prey. (By that I mean they will stalk/track/chase it's victim until it gets exhausted and hasn't much fight left in it) So Chickens would be a good meal, if they weren't locked up tight at night! I'm still learning about them, they are really unique animals and I'm hoping to help out (in a volunteering capacity) at a place called Devils@Cradle. They are doing research there and helping to set up breeding programs. The poor buggers are suffering from a cancer called Devil Facial Tumor Disease. I think they have just been 'upgraded' to Endangered, due to the disease. If your interested in Devils, a visit to Tassie would sort that out! (I should get paid by the Government for this plug, do you not think?!!!!!) Maybe check out the Devils@Cradle website, which is http://www.devilsatcradle.com/index1.htm

*tx_dane_mom- The flooring in my coup is a wooden one and it has been raised off the ground on stilts, so I'm confident that no Quoll or other predator like feral cat (and we have LOADS of those here... don't get me started on that issue!!!) will get in that way. First they have to negotiate the wire fence that has been Quoll-proofed!!!

*Hotwings- (love that ID to by the way!) The Government would just laugh at me I think if I asked for money back. I should give it a shot though... I think Farmers that have lost sheep to dog attacks (which is a serious issue here, and I have had experience in this are - but that is another story) usually prosecute the dog owner and get compensation thataway - it is unheard of for the Government to payout. But perhapes I could be the first, and get it on the drawing board so to speak?! I do love to complain! After all I'm British and female!! What a combination

*Flufnstuffs~Fluffysilkies- (phew, thats a long ID!!!) I haven't heard of havaheart traps, but will do some 'google=ing' on it and see what comes up. There are traps used here for Devils that are safe and harm free as it were - thanks for mentioning it, as it is a great idea! I should have thought about this myself really. 'Tis commonsense after all hey! I should get one to relocate the Possums. I worry that my dogs will catch one and rip it to shreds one of these days!

*Kingscalls- I had to laugh at your not worrying so much when you see a road kill 'coon' (and I'm guessing 'coon' stands for raccoon! - Just an educated guess there on my part, hehehe!)

*Buckguy20 (& Flufnstuffs~)- the idea of reloacting 'pest's to the tip/dump is a brilliant idea. Giving them an alternative sorce of norishment is exactly what is called for!

*KrisRose- Cheers for the welcome! I was wondering if there are any other Aussies in here, as I did notice most people seem to be from the States! If I am the only Tassie person - then I will have to make sure I don't act Tasmanian... I should explain that it is a widely held belief here in Australia, that all Tasmanian people are born with two heads! I'm not really sure why that is, as I myself am English, and so am rather clueless on that! I will say however that Tasmanian's are unique (just like their native furfriends!) in the way they do things. Often I am left scratching my head in wonder! But I think that is what makes the place so charming. I am happy to be living my life here!

Thanks everyone for responding to my 'topic'... I hope I answered all the questions!

I think your Quolls are the same problem we have with some of our hawks (protected species) here---someone told me to do the "Three Ss"

Shoot
Shovel
And Shut up

Are y'all not allowed to defend your livestock? I think we have a provision for it here in state law.

I had never heard of a Quoll, either; I thought maybe it was like a Chupacabra. Then when I looked at the photo, I thought it must inhabit the same niche as our possums do.

But reading the blurb about it, it EATS possums!!! Yikes!

The more time I spend in Predators and Pests, the more convinced I am that we who raise chickens must realize that we are likely going to be bringing predators into our lives; sometimes, those predators might be protected animals. In a sense, we are "baiting" them, and I don't think it's right of us to kill them if we can protect our animals with better coop design and installation.

If an animal is NOT a protected animal, or if it is potentially dangerous to human life (cougar or black bear come to mind), then I think it is fair game to rehome it to the Great Beyond.

Just my 2 cents, having had hens killed by dog and red-tailed hawk.
