Quotes and Thoughts for the Day

Well I figured out the sun and gray skies. The wildfires in Canada are causing a haze over Wisconsin and that what caused the sun to look pink. I couldn't imagine dealing with wild fire, how scary. There were two fire scares when I worked on the farm. One was the farms back field because a rider through down a cigarette and the other was a neighbors hay field. I've never seen people scramble together so quick to bring trailers for emergency evacuation s for the horses. Terrifying and exciting all in one.

We get wild fires. It's so sad to see one of our mountain on fire. A lot of those beautiful big pine trees going, and now, folks are building right up the side of the mountains, not just the foothills. Some homes have been taken in the last few yrs. Hoping these rains will help, if the will just keep coming and going. Would be great.

Off to take care of some chicken..."stuff". :) Had a rooster for a while, thought the collar would work, didn't do too well with him, but...he was the man for a while! I have fertile eggs. Not sure how long they will be, but I've set some, and they are developing. I am so excited. This roo was so sweet. Not mean to my dogs or me. I couldn't pick him up around the yard, but would have to take him off the edge of a nest box at nights, and he wouldn't peck or anything, not even when I was adjusting the collar. It keeps them from taking in enough air to crow loud..supposed to work that way. Does for some, not all. Will try again if I get a boy out of one of these eggs collected. If!

I thought you were the one that said you had a lodge. Tell us a bit about it..sounds fun!

Yup! It surely is fun! We've been running this lodge for 8 years now. We have 19 rooms in all. We are a block and a half off of the downtown so people really love to stay here since they can easily walk to the shops. Plus we have a mountain in our backyard so it makes people feel like they are still somewhat isolated and in the wilderness. We do a campfire and s'mores each night with our guests. We use this time to get to know people, hear their stories, share our stories and even, sometimes, witness to them. We've made wonderful, lifelong friendships all due to the campfires at night. And we are filling up fast! We'll be booked in about a week!

We found something wonderful this morning, when driving down the road that joins the one I'm moving onto soon, we spotted this (click on pic to enlarge):

I just said to my DH this morning at breakfast, next time we buy eggs, I want to support one of the local chicken keepers and there it was. One of three of these egg selling systems by the side of the road that I know off in this area. The lady at the house came outside when we stopped, so I went in and chatted with her a bit and learned the eggs are being sold by a 12yo boy, who is the proud owner of 150 hens and a couple of ducks, who have the run of a huge field. I asked her if I can see them and she took me to the back of her house where I saw some of the birds and they looked happy, happy.

It was so wonderful to see and hear how well he is doing! I said to her I'd much rather buy eggs from him than the supermarket (even if they are somewhat cheaper). It's so good to see kids do things like this and his flock looked great!

Quote: No, I had the stomach slip up into the lung cavity- It feels like you are having a heart attack. Everything went white and I figured I had died. My first thought was, "My son is too young to lose his mom." then I got my sight back and decided that I should not lift any more cement anything for a while...you know, until he is old enough to lose his mom, then I am rearranging the furniture.
