Hello everyone!
We went to Kyle's chemo appointment yesterday, and everything went very well. His ANC number was over 1600. As a reference, his ANC last week was 525. To say the least, it was MUCH better this week. This number is driven by white blood cell counts and other blood related counts. He did receive his treatment. We were able to speak with his doctor a little while we were there. We asked if we would be able to notice any behavioral changes if his blood counts were low. She said that we should not expect to see any indications for low white blood cell counts or platelet counts. If his red blood cell count is low, we might notice him getting tired, but nothing too drastic. This means his weekly blood test when we go to chemo is a important part of keeping him healthy.
Kyle was a total rockstar with the actual treatment. He even watched as the nurse inserted the needle this time without flinching. I can't even watch that. He is not as fascinated by watching them take blood, but he still wants to know it is getting done. We had an extra long wait for test results (roughly 2.5 hours), but he just snacked, watched TV, played Playdoh and read books. He was so content despite our growing irritation with how long it was taking. Once the actual chemo was administered, he barely noticed. As the nurse went to remove the needle (the part he had trouble with last week), he just watched and talked nervously, but then laughed after it was over almost like he was surprised it didn't hurt. He still has anxiety over any time we want to touch his port or remove a bandaid or say "Can I see?" but we are praying that the more things don't hurt, he can start to trusting us more.
He received two chemo drugs yesterday. The second one is the one that can cause nausea. We noticed a definite decrease in his appetite yesterday despite having Zofran. We have also been trying a little peppermint oil in water, which seems to help as well. He had a little issue this morning at breakfast but seems to be better as the day goes on. One positive thing to note, Kyle gained a half pound this week!!! We are excited about this little victory. His appetite has been great recently, so we expect that after 24-48 hours of nausea, he will be back to eating again. The second drug also causes his blood counts to drop 7-10 days after getting it. His ANC was very good yesterday, so we will see how drastically it is effected in the next few weeks.
We have been venturing out a bit more while staying extra cautious about hand washing. It is good to see Kyle out and about and having fun. We just have to do it in short bursts.
Thank you for your continued prayers!

So happy to hear the news!
