Well... Nala passed over the rainbow bridge on May 5th, 2012.

Nala had been struggling with pneumonia, as her large litter of six hoglets in Jan. left her system weakened. Hedgehogs are so good at hiding illness, the often are able to until it is too late. Even though she got all of her meds, the day after her last dose she unexpectedly passed to what we believe was a heart attack due to stress.

"At a little over one year old, Nala passed on May 5th, 2012. She will be dearly missed by our family for the large, quirky, friendly, funny girl she was. I cannot thank her enough for giving me the joy of the first litter I worked so hard and for so long to attain. She lives on through her sons Jake and Milo, her daughters Prickles, Z, Scratte, and Ryla. Hopefully she will also have grandhogs to carry on all that she was. It's a sad day on the farm."
I'm still missing her terribly and it's awful to have to look at her empty spot on the cage shelves. I can't help but feel like I didn't do enough, but I did what I could.

We'll be getting two new girls soon, and I'm thinking about naming one girl Derby in honor of the day she passed.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the same happen to me with my hedgie though it wasn't from having a litter. I don't know exactly but she was having a hard time with staying at her higher body temp even though I had heat lamps on her. I had taken her to the doctor as well and had her on medicine. I really understand when you feel like you might have been able to do more but it sounds like you did all that you could do. She was very cute. I love those little faces!

By the way, are you keeping the litter?

Thanks everyone, for your support.

A lot of things can cause that - massive internal infection, cancer, wobbly hedgehog syndrome, parasites, organ failure. It's a broad spectrum symptom, as I like to call it - sorry for your loss.

The rest of her litter has already been rehomed except for her son, Jake, which I retained (and is the light of my life, the sweetest hedgehog ever). Right now Jake is having his first date with Czenzi, though I'm about to take him out and put his father in. I believe he's still too young at this point to breed, even though he's at the appropriate age to start trying.

Here he is -
