R.I.P. Pearl :-(((

No laughing here. I lost a BR last month, and whenever I go out to the coop and find any of her feathers, I collect them and made a nice bouquet out of them. I also saved her last egg to blow out and decorate in memory of her.

I'm so sorry, it always seems to be the favorites....

ps, don't feel bad about crying for a chicken. They are pets, friends, and members of the family.

Good luck with the rest. Things should get a little better hopefully as the season heads into winter.

I have cried countless tears over chicken losses...and I try not to get attached, but there is just something about them!! I just love 'em!!!

I'm sorry about Pearl. We had a bantam named Pearl, too. Her ears were white like pearl earrings! She won a blue ribbon in the county fair. We lost her to virus after a long, cold, wet winter.

We just lost our Hedwig too. Same thing. Only she's gone without a trace. I know it was a hawk cause there was a big Cooper's hawk staking out the compost pile today where they like to forage. And Hedwig had gotten in a bad habit of foraging by herself and coming up to the house by herself during the cold days latelywhile the others stayed in the barn...she was a brave little thing, always trying to defend her babies when she had them with her over the summer. I've been looking for her all day and just was out in the barn staring at her empty roost and feeling awful because now I know for sure she's really not coming back. She was Dazzle's fav, too, and we were really looking forward to her hatching more chicks for us next spring, she was such a good mama...and so cute and friendly. We will miss her very much.

They do seem to help. They're not exactly attractive, so I tend to try and hang them where I think they'll do the most good...not always a very good guess, we have a lot of property. :| After a while, we kinda realized that with us anyway it's just part of having chickens, you have to expect losses in one way or another, and there are a lot of ways through either predators or illness or natural causes. I'm sorry about your banty too...fall is the worst time of the year, for having hawk problems, especially around Thanksgiving, it seems.
