We are starting to raise netherland dwarf rabbits. Since they are being raised by our daughter with a disability, they will winter in the basement. The largest I can see the herd getting is a couple or three does and a buck.

I am torn between building wooden/wire hutches, and ordering all wire cages and trays.

I can build cheaper, because of the freight to bring in the cages. I would keep them on shavings in the homemade cage, but is the wood going to start smelling like urine? If so then the extra cost of all wire would probably be worth it.

Here is what I would like to build, if it would work.

Yes, the wood is going to absorb urine, and smell like it. Particularly the cage the buck is in - bucks spray urine to spread their scent around. Some aren't really bad about it; with others, it's almost like an obsession. Any surface that is within splatter range of a buck (about 6 feet) should be washable.
