Our neighbors free range rabbit dug a hole under our shed and ended up having babies in there. I know rabbits only come at night to feed their babies but she hasn’t come back. I looked in the den and I saw that two babies were dead and I don’t know how many are in there. I don’t know if I should take them out or leave them in there and hope she comes back, what should I do?

Does the neighbor know there are bunnies? Did they do something different to prevent the mother coming back? How big/old are the babies, rabbits can actually fend for themselves at a fairly young/small stage however may still stay in the den. (My only real experience is when a wild rabbit had babies in our yard and the mother abandoned them due to our dog and so I did some internet surfing)

The neighbors don’t know yet because I found them late at night, and we are going to talk to them today. They look to be about a week to two weeks old and I’m almost positive that our rabbit was the one who got her pregnant because we have an outdoor pen we put our rabbits in to run around during the day and she got into the pen. I’ve done a lot of research but wild rabbits usually is what’s discussed and not tame rabbits

Had a similar experience with wild rabbits this summer. I thought the mother was dead (neighbor had killed a rabbit) and I had NEVER seen one at the nest. The bunnies were maybe a week old (eyes not open could not yet hop) and would not survive without a mother. I left them. The mother must have been alive and continued to care for them. I NEVER saw the mom, but I saw some of the bunnies a few times in the following weeks hopping around, bigger and stronger. They did not all survive, but the mothers can be very secretive and will continue to return. Good luck.

Well the mother has also been injured, I don’t know for sure what happened but i think her hips were dislocated or something of that nature, I’m worried that they may think she had to be euthanized. I have also checked the babies and the one that I saw was pretty skinny, I don’t know if I should take them out and bottle feed them for now or just wait and talk to the neighbor. I also don’t know if she made it back to their house or if she was grabbed by a predictor.

Poor bunnies, any updates, survivors? I guess I wouldn’t worry too much about handling the babies if the parents are used to human smells already.

There were four that were alive they were really skinny and there was a lot of maggots so I had to get them out of there, over night two strayed from the group and were cold, one wasn’t as cold and started doing really well then I checked up on him 20 minutes later and he didn’t make it, the other one is still alive but they are all sluggish and won’t eat
