Rabbit doe not gathering hay means not pregnant?

Yes - around 2-3 weeks they should start eating the pellets, but should still be nursing. (This is the part where it gets kind of expensive.) ;)

As for the price, it depends on where you live, but I'd say for mix-breed rabbits $40 is too much. I've seen show-quality bucks for $40. But I live in a small, rural town, and it's hard to sell rabbits for any high price. My very first litter, which was part Rex and part Satin, I believe I charged only $8 (which is the price we got both the parents for). The price many pet stores seem to sell at is about $20. Depending on the area you live in, I'd say $10-$25 would be good for a pet rabbit.
