Hi again! I re-bred my New Zealand doe a little over two weeks ago, this is her second litter. She lost her first litter, and they were delivered several days late. She is at day 15 currently, and is already gathering hay and making a nest. She isn’t due for another 16 days! I have no clue what is going on with her. The first litter was terribly malformed and were born dead, so I’m praying that this litter makes it. Any ideas on why she’s hay gathering early? Thank you.

Some does seem to nest early. I’ve heard of does nesting really late and then I’ve heard of some nesting really early like yours. I wouldn’t be too worried about it.

Another thing came to mind. She may be having a false pregnancy. I’ve had a couple does have a false pregnancy before. They last about 17 days whereas an actual pregnancy lasts around 31 days. Maybe she’s having a false pregnancy?
I was thinking about that. Can false pregnancies occur when she is actually pregnant? The time that we bred her was successful, so she should be pregnant. And she’s also started pulling fur. We recently moved the rabbits into different hutches, so she’s a bit closer to her neighbor, who is a young buck, so maybe that caused a false pregnancy? The only thing is that her neighbors have always been bucks, because she’s our only doe.

I don’t think they can have a false pregnancy during while they are actually pregnant. So if she doesn’t give birth around her due date, you’ll know it was a false pregnancy. But if it was a successful breeding than she likely is pregnant and may be nesting early. So don’t be discouraged! Keep us updated!

False pregnancy is when they think they are pregnant but are not. She might just be nesting early

I sure will! Thanks for the help, everyone on BYC had been amazingly helpful and friendly. I’m thankful for you all!

Ok I’m joining your rabbit nesting early problem LOL. I checked on my two pregnant (hopefully!) does and one of them pulled mass amounts of fur. She’s only on day 8 and she has pulled a BUNCH of fur. She had four successful fall offs and was receptive to the breeding. I just hope it’s not a false pregnancy or something. I guess we’ll see soon. But I find it so weird that she’s nesting so early. I’ve never had this problem before.

So weird! I wonder what’s going on with our does.

I decided to rebreed my doe who’s nesting early just to be on the safe side if she is actually having a false pregnancy. She was VERY receptive. The buck had three fall offs with her in just a couple of minutes. We’re going to breed her again in about 8 hours or so and hope for a couple more fall offs. So she’s either due June 27th or July 5th 😂 we’ll see
