If the doe is alot smaller than the buck the babies could be to large for her to deliver safely. If the doe is the larger breed it doesn't matter how small the buck is as long as he gets the job done.

i haven't met the buck but my doe is the Rex so I'm hoping the buck is a bit smaller. as you can tell, i don't know too much about breeding them. I breed them when i was younger, but it was mostly my mistake lol.

If I ever do meat rabbits, I'd really like to have a colony. For now, my does especially have plenty of room in their hutch, and I have a dog pen covered in chicken wire for them to run in sometimes. The pen isn't predator-proof, so I can't leave them there overnight - but the hawks can't fly in during the day, so they're safe unless they dig out.

I also have one buck who really did nothing but chew on his cage all day. Now I usually just let him out in the morning and lock him back up at night. But I guess my situation is unusual because not only are no dogs around that would get him, but he's also one of the tamest rabbits I've ever seen. He HATES being held, but he loves to be petted and he'll come right up to me. He never runs away because (I assume) he can smell the does. :) It makes me really happy to see him hopping around and having the time of his life.
Then again, I wouldn't do this with any rabbit that was very valuable to me. I wouldn't even trust my other buck not to run away if I let him loose.

Rabbits are actually most active during the afternoon, night, and morning but of course you won't be awake to watch them in the pen. But they sleep and are awake all different times. Good job at letting your rabbits out!!
