Rabbits Oh my.

One won't let me lay it on it's back. It's a fairly nice rabbit but when it gets mad, it's mad! And it(Amanda) doesn't like being turned upside down or fast movement.

Does anyone know of a rabbit version of the BYC?

Oh and yes, they are inside right now, seperate cages. I am trying to avoid having 8,453,962 bunnies!

Eventually we are going to have a hutch/run set up next to the chicken run.

my husband keeps wanting me to give into raising rabbits for meat.. but I think emotionally it would be easier to butcher a rabbit that sprayed me a few times..

Not sure

I am thinking birds first..

www.homesteadingtoday.com has a whole section on Rabbits for profit, but a lot of us BYCers are rabbit people, too. I have several pet rabbits and I'm picking up my meat rabbits next week.

Mine dont' lie still, either. To check sex, I hold my rabbits upright by the scruff with my right hand and under their bum with my left and press gently above their genitals with my left thumb to see what I've got or to check the does for breeding readiness.

Spraying doesn't bother me that much, I just put the bucks' cages lower to the ground, so if it hits me, it gets my shoes and I put a perforated metal divider in the cage so he doesn't spray everything else in sight.

On the bright side, my bucks usually have the most even and sweet temperments and they make the best pets, even if they do spray. The only one I neutered was my favorite pet rabbit and he had a huge testicular tumor that needed to be removed. I was an employee of my vet, so she did the surgery for about $15. Would a spay/neuter clinic consider doing the surgery? Doesn't hurt to ask! I'm pretty sure a neuter would be the cheapest fix and the best recovery.
