I have been considering raising meat rabbits for home consumption. I know most people have trouble slaughtering, but as long as I'm not killing several at one time, I don't think I will have much trouble. I've butcher rabbit before. Not just wild bunny, but domestic rabbits that I had gotten from a friend. But my neighbors decided to "help" and wanted to do just one day of slaughtering. That resulting in all of us being traumatized by rabbit-cry after rabbit-cry as you kill them. Its an unnerving enough sound to hear once or twice, but to hear it all day for hours can set you on edge for a very long time.

Is there any way to actually prevent the death-screen from happening?

tie their rear feet in a noose,stretch their necks and off with their heads with a hatchet/ cane knife. Quick and painless.

Really a great tool.The stun gun and cervical dislocater are really great. If you watch the one video of the gun, you can see the nose wiggling from breathing. The second the gun goes off it stops. The rabbit is dead before it even knows what hit him.

I bought 2 California Bucks and 2 New Zealand does in Jan. I got the the 2 bucks planning to kill one to make sure I was going to be able. I have hunted rabbit in the past, so I was pretty sure I'd be ok, but you never know when you raise something and care for it... I shot it in the head with my son's air rifle (metal pointed tip pellets, he shoots squirrels with it.) Instant death, he just twitched a little. Cleaning was much easier than cleaning a chicken. I was very pleased and have acquired 2 more bunnies since then, a pair of what I think are broken New Zealands. We are keeping these 2 as pets b/c they are so sweet and friendly. We don't even have them caged. They stay around the barn and snuggle with our month old chicks and hop around with the goats eating grass. We can walk right up and pick them up for snuggles and they don't run. They are super sweet! But I suppose they will eventually have babies, lots of babies, and I will have to either sell them or use them for food for the family. I will deal with that when the time comes. It's easier to think of my other rabbits as food sources b/c they are MEAN and difficult to handle. I have fresh scars on my arms from when I was trying to pick up the white NZ doe to put her in to breed. She rolled back onto her back so she could kick at me with those razor claws!
