Raccoon attack, injured chicken

We had an unfortunate raccoon attack while traveling when our friends were keeping eye on the coop. We lost four chickens and one was badly injured when we found her. We have been trying to nurse her back to health for the last 3 weeks. Syringe feeding her water and moistened food. Ibuprofen crushed in her water with electrolytes. She seemed like she was getting (slowly) better after her wounds had healed (we used a chicken wound care product from our local Tractor and Supply for chickens), we think she was blinded during the attack and potentially suffered a head trauma? The other chickens were pecking at her wounds so we’ve had her separated from the flock for the last two weeks to let her heal and rest. This morning we went out and noticed she could not keep her head up and was moving her beak repetitively in the dirt. She is not moving and seems so lethargic you would think she is dead although she is still breathing and alive. We were not able to get her to drink or eat anything today. She also seems to be losing feathers which may be normal for this time of year. She seems to have worsened greatly in the past 24 hours. Our biggest concern is that she might be in pain and suffering. We’re not sure if we should assist her in ending her life because it seems the quality of her life has deteriorated drastically in the last 24 hours - or continue to try to nurture her back to health. She hasn’t laid an egg since the raccoon attack 3 weeks ago. We would love help and suggestions.

Do you have some pictures? I’m no expert, but it sounds like it’s not good. Hopefully someone more experienced can chime in after my response bumps this post up in the threads.

Her condition seems to have worsened a bit, she is still alive and breathing and moves when I help her. Her abdomen and back area feel very hard and firm, not sure if she’s also egg bound? We don’t want her to suffer and are wondering if we should help her pass this weekend. Any advice would be helpful!

I personally think she looks pretty bad, and if she were my bird, I would put her down immediately. Please do not make a decision solely off what I say, I also don’t know what she looks like in real life, but from pictures she does not look good.

Thank you for your advice. We are feeling the same. Her quality of life is declining everyday. What are the most humane/painless ways to put down a chicken at home?

Your chicken is dying. There is no hope she'll survive. Likely she's internally bleeding, and that's why her body feels so hard. Here is the most humane method of ending it for her. https://the-chicken-chick.com/how-to-humanely-euthanize-chicken-by-dr/
Thank you. We appreciate all of the help and support. The article was very helpful. We helped our sweet chicken, bubbles (our son named her years ago), humanely pass this evening. It was our first time having to do this. It was sad but we are relieved to know she is no longer suffering. Again, thank you for sharing your experience, knowledge, advice and support.
